Mike Alexander

I am an emerging FN artist. For much of my life, ink has played an economically viable method of creative expression for me.

I was born in Winnipeg, MB, a member of the Swan Lake First Nation. Adopted out, I grew up in an urban setting and found art at a young age. Playing in bands afforded me a chance to see the world. Though I have attended some University courses, I am self-educated and fiercely interested in knowledge and understanding.

Now opening a new, quiet and reflective chapter of life, I choose art as one of my closest companions for the ongoing search for recovery, healing, introspection and identity. I have spent two years self-finacing and selling serigraphs and giclees of my original designs. I have sold silkscreened shirts with my work on it in Victoria and beyond.

December 2016 saw my first solo show, "Skin of Ash: A Contemporary Indigenous Response to Colonization" at Cavity Curiosity Shop in Victoria. It was an exhibition of drawings depicting the pain, and trauma of substance abuse, suicide and and depression in the context of decoloniztion.

I am the father to two beautiful children, and enjoy being an amateur triathlete.

My goal is to further enrich my life and the lives of others through the exploration of culture as seen through my eyes and experience.
