Tsimshian, Kitsumkalum BC

I am a Nlaka'pamux born First Nation, born and raised in Lytton BC. After graduating from Residential School I moved North to Terrace BC where I met my Wife and have been living here for over 40 years. I am a Father of 6 and Grandfather to 15. I started carving in the 80s and was taught by Freda Diesing in a pilot carving program that is widely known today as the 'Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art'. I was adopted by the Kitsumkalum Wolf House of Wudiwiye of the Tsimshian Nation.

I specialize in hat carving and like to stick to the basics by not using machines. Carving the way our ancestors did is important to me. I also carve panels, spoons, bowls, totem poles, canoes, paddles and anything else that inspires me. To see some of my work please visit my facebook page www.facebook.com/mauricesamcarvings
