Lou-ann Neel

Indigenous/First Nation Association(s):

My name is Lou-ann Ika'wega Neel and I am a Kwagiulth Artist specializing in 2-D paintings (i.e. acrylic on paper); and textiles (button blankets, hand-painted garments, textile accessories, wall hangings).

Over the past few years, I have also started to experiment in the creation of unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry works.

All of my work is based on a story - it might be a traditional legend, or it could be something from more recent times or even an 'urban legend'...that's my idea of having LOTS of fun...transforming stories into painted or textile or jewelry work!

I am also interested in digital video and digital photography.  I want to experiment with these mediums to support my interest in storytelling.  I think about all of my family members on my mum's side of my family and on my dad's side of my family, and also in the communities where I have lived.  I see so many wonderful stories...I want to tell those stories from a first-person perspective.

Up until the summer of 2011, I worked in the non-profit and public sevice sectors as an arts/language and culture program coordinator and manager.  I really enjoyed the work I was doing, it was very rewarding to be a part of various programs and initiatives that support artists and those who keep our cultures and languages alive.

But somewhere along the way I think all those artists helped me to realize that I hadn't fulfilled my own dream of spending more time on my artwork.  So I decided to step away from the administrative and coordination for a while to pursue my dream of attending art school and learning all kinds of great new ways to express myself through my artwork.

In 2015, I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Emily Carr University of Art & Design, and since then, I've been doing all kinds of exciting new works in digital design, jewelry, and more recently, carving. Sometimes I feel like the days aren't long enough to create all the things I want to create! But I'm getting better at planning my artsy-schedule and feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunities, the space, the quiet times and the art supplies to keep creating whenever Spirit moves me to! Gilakas'la! Thanks for visiting my page.
